Common Symptoms of a Failing Throttle Body (VAG 1.4L / 1.6L MPI)

  • Unstable idle, “hunting,” or engine stalling at stops

  • Hesitation or flat spot during acceleration

  • Check Engine Light (CEL) – common DTCs: P0638, P0697, P2100, P2101, P2119, P2135

  • Poor throttle response / delayed acceleration

  • Reduced power / limp mode

  • Electronic throttle control light illuminated on dashboard

  • Cruise control malfunction (if equipped)

  • Rough idle that improves when throttle is applied

  • Engine dies when coming to a stop

  • Poor fuel economy

These symptoms are frequently reported for higher‑mileage VAG vehicles equipped with 1.4L 16V and 1.6L MPI engines when the throttle body components wear out or carbon buildup occurs.

Installation & Adaptation Tips

IMPORTANT: After replacing the Electronic Throttle Body (ETB) on VAG 1.4L / 1.6L engines, a throttle self-learning / idle relearn procedure is REQUIRED. Using a professional diagnostic scanner (VCDS / VAG‑COM) is strongly recommended.

Step Action
1 Disconnect the negative battery terminal for 5–10 minutes (clears old learned values).
2 Remove the air intake duct and disconnect the electrical connector (6‑pin D‑shape).
3 Remove any coolant hoses attached to the throttle body (if equipped with throttle body heating – some Pierburg variants may have heating connections).
4 Remove the four mounting bolts and old throttle body.
5 Discard the old gasket and clean the mating surface on the intake manifold.
6 Install a new gasket (strongly recommended – sold separately, VAG part 037129717B or equivalent).
7 Install the new throttle body. Torque bolts to 8–10 Nm (6–7 lb-ft)-.
8 Reconnect coolant hoses (if equipped), electrical connector, and air intake duct.
9 Reconnect the battery.
10 Turn ignition ON (do not start engine) and wait 10 seconds.
11 Turn ignition OFF for 10 seconds.
12 Use VCDS / VAG‑COM to perform “Throttle Body Adaptation” – Basic Settings Group 098 in Engine module (for these engines).
13 Start the engine and let it idle for 5 minutes (do not touch accelerator).
14 Turn engine off for 30 seconds, then restart and drive normally. The ECU will complete the adaptation.

For VAG 1.4L 16V / 1.6L MPI (EA111/EA113): The battery‑disconnect method may not fully adapt the throttle body on these engines. Professional diagnostic equipment (VCDS) is highly recommended to perform Basic Settings Group 098. After replacement, it may take a few drive cycles for the ECU to fully adapt. A relearn calibration procedure is mandatory after installation – do not skip this step. Note that Pierburg throttle bodies come with a specific requirement: “Control Unit/Software must be trained/updated”- – ensure that the adaptation procedure is completed correctly for Pierburg-manufactured units.

Special Note for Pierburg Variants: Pierburg throttle bodies may have either a vacuum connection (7.03703.38.0) or no vacuum connection (7.03703.39.0). Ensure you verify the correct variant for your vehicle‘s intake system before purchase. The vacuum port is typically used for crankcase ventilation or as an actuator source for certain emissions systems.

How to Ensure You Get the Correct Part

  1. Confirm your vehicle is equipped with a 1.4L 16V or 1.6L MPI naturally aspirated petrol engine (EA111 / EA113 families). Not compatible with 1.8T turbo, 1.9TDI, 2.0L 8V AZJ, or 1.2L 12V engines without verification.

  2. Verify your vehicle has electronic throttle control (drive-by-wire) – if you have a mechanical throttle cable, this electronic throttle body will NOT fit.

  3. Check your vehicle model and year against the fitment table (includes Audi A2; SEAT Cordoba/Ibiza/Leon/Toledo; Škoda Fabia/Octavia; Volkswagen Bora/Caddy/Golf IV/Lupo/New Beetle/Passat/Polo).

  4. Locate the original part number on your existing throttle body – look for 036133062B036133062L036133062N06A133062B06A133062P408238321007Z, or the Pierburg 7.03703.38.0 / 7.03703.39.0.

  5. Verify the connector has 6 pins and is D‑shape (VAG standard for this generation).

  6. Measure or confirm the throttle bore diameter is 44mm.

  7. Check if your original throttle body has a vacuum connection – if so, ensure you are purchasing the Pierburg 7.03703.38.0 variant with a vacuum port.

  8. Check the mounting bolt pattern (4 bolts) and air intake duct connection match the product photos.

  9. Note that a new mounting gasket is not included and must be purchased separately (VAG gasket 037129717B or equivalent).

  10. Contact us with your VIN or a photo of your original part if unsure.

⚠️ Important: This throttle body is for VAG 1.4L 16V and 1.6L 8V MPI/Natural Aspirated petrol engines ONLY. It will NOT fit:

  • 2.0L 8V AZJ engines (Škoda Octavia 2.0L – use 030133062D instead)

  • Mechanical throttle cable systems – this is an electronic drive-by-wire unit

  • 1.8T turbocharged engines – different throttle body calibration and bore

  • 1.9 TDI / 2.0 TDI diesel engines – diesel intake systems are different

  • 2.0L FSI (BPY, BWA) engines – different throttle body

  • 1.2L 12V TDI or petrol – displacement differs

  • Most 1.6L 16V engines (BFQ is 8V) – verify engine code with original OE number

After-Sales & Disclaimer

Packing List

  • Electronic Throttle Body Unit (44mm bore, complete assembly with TPS and motor) × 1

  • (Gasket not included – purchase separately)

  • Warranty Card / Certificate of Quality × 1

  • Pre-installation check: Inspect the throttle body for any defects. Verify the OE number and connector type (6‑pin D‑shape) before installation.

  • Gasket requirement: A new mounting gasket is strongly recommended – gasket not included. A damaged or reused gasket may cause rough idle or vacuum leaks.

  • Pierburg adaptation requirement: Pierburg throttle bodies require the “Control Unit/Software must be trained/updated” after installation-. Failure to perform this may result in erratic idle or drivability issues.

  • Relearn requirement: A throttle relearn calibration procedure is mandatory after installation. Professional diagnostic equipment (VCDS) is strongly recommended for proper adaptation.

  • Vacuum connection verification: For Pierburg variants, note that 7.03703.38.0 has a vacuum connection, while 7.03703.39.0 does not. Ensure you are selecting the correct variant for your vehicle‘s intake system.

  • Professional installation recommended: If you are not comfortable performing the adaptation procedure or verifying vacuum connection requirements, professional installation is recommended.
